2 new IPL franchises will be added in 2022: Report

Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals in the 13th edition of the IPL at the United Arab Emirates to win their 5th IPL title. After the 2020 IPL season came to a close, there were reports and widespread speculations that BCCI is planning to expand the league by adding an extra team.

The ninth team would hail from Ahmedabad and the corporate body of the city reported that home games shall be played at Sardar Patel Stadium. Then after some days, the BCCI changed their mind and came up with another proposal where it stated that they are planning to add two more teams to make it to a 10-team league instead of 8 teams.

A mega auction was also on cards ahead of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League. In the latest development, it is now reported that BCCI changed their mind once again to postpone the idea of including two more teams to 2022 season.

This means that only 8 teams will take part in the forthcoming season of the IPL. A 10-team T20 fest shall commence from 2022 season.

The final decision will be taken at BCCI’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) slated to be held in Ahmedabad on December 24. “The BCCI could call for the bids in February or March or April – whenever they think the time is right.

The adding of new franchises, say stakeholders, will also add value to the 2021 edition once it becomes a talking point. That’s the line of thought as of now,” those tracking developments told Times of India.

Franchises unhappy with inclusion of 2 teams:

While the BCCI is planning several things to make the IPL much more competitive, majority of the teams in the league have expressed unhappiness over the inclusion of two more teams. However, BCCI is curious to expand the tournament as they are getting queries from several corporate houses.

“Two new franchises will obviously have their own share of value when the media rights tender comes along. Also, two more things: First, the central revenue pool for the 2021 season won’t be diluted, which means the franchises will be happy; Second, once again 60 matches will be held, which means lesser double-headers, so the broadcaster will be happy,” sources added.
