Australian cricket in the face of disaster

[add42]

Australia, the host country of the T20 World Cup, is now in crisis. The country’s cricket board has suffered huge financial losses due to the outbreak of coronavirus.

This time, Cricket Australia (CA) has laid off 40 employees, including batting coach Graeme Hick, to reduce costs. Earlier, 80 per cent employees of the board were sent on compulsory leave. If the T20 World Cup and the home series against India are canceled, their disaster will be exacerbated. Coach Justin Langer called on everyone to work together in this difficult time.

It has been decided to postpone the international tours of Australia ‘A’ team to save money. Doing so would save CA about 40 million a year. Langer said,

“If everyone can follow the same path, we can move forward vigorously. We can create miracles. But if it is divided, we will not be able to move in the same direction. It would be catastrophic. I am very optimistic that everyone will be able to move forward together.”

Graham Hick has been Australia’s batting coach for four years. His name was on the cut list. Hick has been with the board since 2013. Langer feels bad for him, “You won’t find more honest people than Graeme Hick. His sense of morality is incredible. His knowledge of the game is also incredible. So the decision was really very difficult. But we have nothing to do with it. It’s all about reducing costs. We have been forced because of the COVID-19 situation.”
