Dananjaya’s bowling action cleared by ICC

Sri Lanka spinner Akila Dananjaya has been allowed to bowl again after passing a test of bowling action. The International Cricket Council (ICC) said in a statement on Friday that Dananjaya had passed the action test.

The 27-year old spinner was banned from bowling in international cricket because of his actions were found to be illegal twice in a year. The ban expires in August 2020. But according to the ICC rules, even if the ban expires, bowling permission will be given only after passing the bowling action test.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Dananjaya did not have the opportunity to go to the ICC’s biomechanics lab to test his bowling action. Video footage sent by the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) has been tested by an ICC panel. It was found that the bend of his elbow was less than 15 degrees.

Dananjaya played for the Galle Gladiators in the Lanka Premier League (LPL) last year. The tournament did not go very well for him. He bowled at 10.56 economy rate and took two wickets.

Even if Dananjaya is released after overcoming the ban, it will not be easy for him to return to the national team. Left-arm spinner Lasith Embuldeniya and leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga have proved themselves in the national team. Dananjaya will have to compete with them.

So far the spinner has played 6 Tests, 36 ODIs and 22 T20Is. He has 33 wickets in 6 Tests at an average of 24.81. He has taken 73 wickets in limited-overs cricket.
