Dhoni hesitated to include Kohli into the side in 2008
Former Indian selector Dilip Vengsarkar recently revealed that MS Dhoni was not ready to include Virat Kohli into the national side in 2008.
Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni are two pillars of the Indian cricket team without any doubt. Both of them have a strong bonding with each other and they respect each other very well. Virat Kohli made his International debut in 2008 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
Former Indian selector Dilip Vengsarkar recently revealed an interesting incident that happened, back in 2008 when Virat Kohli was about to be selected for the national team after winning the U19 World Cup.
MS Dhoni hesitated to include Virat Kohli
When selecting the side for Sri Lankan tour, the national selector at that time, Dilip Vengsarkar wanted to include the fresh talent, Virat Kohli, into the side. But the skipper then, MS Dhoni and BCCI chairman then, N Srinivasan were not ready to include him into the side.
“I and my colleagues decided that we will take the U-23 boys and at that time we had won the U-19 World Cup, Virat Kohli was the U-19 captain and I selected him in the team. He (Kohli) was technically sound and I thought he should be played. We were going to Sri Lanka and I felt that this is the ideal situation that he should be in the team,” the former selector quoted.
But the head coach and captain wanted to go with the same team combination. ‘No, we haven’t seen him and we will continue with the same team’. I told them ‘You haven’t seen him but I have seen and we have to take this boy,” they said as per Dilip Vensarkar.
In the same year, Virat Kohli led the Indian U19 team to a title win in the U19 World Cup. Soon after making his debut in International cricket, Virat Kohli emerged as one of the legends of the game.
