‘Different’ Mashrafe cuts down weight, starts practice

Bangladesh’s all-time best pacer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has returned to nets after recovering from hamstring injury.

Mashrafe last took part in a game in March during the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League. Before that, he played his last ODI as captain in the same month, stepping down with a thumping 3-0 series win over Zimbabwe.

Mashrafe was then contracted with COVID-19. He started practice sessions after recovering but was later troubled by hamstring injury that ruled him out of BCB President’s Cup last month and ongoing Bangabandhu T20 Cup, or we can say ‘maybe’ after the glimpses of him training in Mirpur on Tuesday.

The Narail Express was not called for Bangabandhu T20 Cup draft but there is still a possibility of seeing the Bangladeshi talisman taking field in midway of the tournament.

Mashrafe was guided by trainer Tushar Kanti Hawlader, who claimed the former lost 10 kilos and will lose more mass.

“Mashrafe self-practiced after having corona. He now wants to get into a good shape by losing weight. I’m helping him with this. I don’t know his weight right now. He has cut down 10 kg. He will cut down more,” Tushar told the reporters.

“It’s too early to say on match fitness. He bowled a bit. He can return fit with the way he has been working out. There’s no issue on thr technique, it’s the fitness which is a problem. If he works on it, he will be fit. He’s different, he’s Mashrafe. He can do a lot things.”

The last two sentences speak about Mashrafe’s character. With around nine months of no competitive cricket, will Mash be seen back on field? Only time will say.
