England vs Germany Preview:
It will be a cracker of a match when England welcome Germany for the Euro 2020 round of 16 match on Thursday evening.
The two quality teams failed to live up to the expectations so far, but English fans will be the happiest of the two with their team qualifying by winning all three games on narrow 1-0 scoreline.
England do not have a great record at the European Championship like their contemporaries, the best they achieved was a third placed finish in 1968 and 1996 and eliminated from the group phase or first knock out round in each of their other 8 appearances at the competition.
Germany on the other hand struggled to get out of the group which includes last year’s finalists France and Portugal. The lost 1-0 to the former and then displayed all their might in defeating the defending champions 4-2. Matchday 3 saw them sitting at 4th for the majority of the game against Hungary, only to be saved by a late Leon Goretzka goal that send them to second in the standings.
The Mannschaft generally come alive in the knockout stages of major tournaments, and they are renowned for deep runs at the European Championships. They are three-times champions, last in English soil in 1996 and semifinalists in last three editions.
England vs Germany: Head-to-head
- We need to go back to 2010 for the last competitive meeting between the teams, which is a memorable World Cup round of 16 clash in South Africa. The match is still remembered for the disallowed goal which could have helped England level 2-2 just after the break, indeed Germany ended up winning 4-1. Thomas Muller was the star of the show with 2 goals.
- The teams met 4 time after that, all friendlies and Germany won twice as against Engalnd’s 1 win with the most recent in November 2017 ending goal-less.
- Their last meeting at Euro was in 2000, group stage clash won by the Three Lions, thanks to an Alan Shearer goal.
England vs Germany: Team News:
Bukayo Saka was a surprise inclusion against Czech Republic, and he produced a man-of-the-match performance to claim a starting role in the round of 16 clash with Germany.
Mason Mount and Ben Chilwell will finish their 10-day quarantine on the day of this fixture and Gareth Southgate may not use either of the players having missed training all the way through.
Jack Grealish was largely quite on Tuesday, which means Phil Foden return to a central role.
Few changes are expected in the back-four and two-man defensive midfield, though Kieran Trippier could get the nod ahead of Luke Shaw.
Jonas Hofmann and Lukas Klostermann are two players unavailable due to injury for Germany.
The likes of Thomas Muller, Mats Hummels, Ilkay Gundogan and Serge Gnabry were all carrying knocks, yet started in the 2-2 draw against Hungary.
Joachim Low was full of praise for Leroy Sane before kick-off and handed him a starting role. He failed to make any impact on the game and poor decision making was evident, will be a surprise to see him playing any part of Germany in the tournament.
It will be harsh on one of Leon Goretzka and Kai Havertz if Low chose to start with Thomas Muller here. The two players contributed with crucial goals in earning team ticket to the knockout rounds.

Southgate’s men look like a tough nut to crack and thanks to their hard-working midfield and defenders that earned clean sheets in three consecutive games. Here they will face a tough test, but I do not see them conceded too many.
At the same time, improvements are evitable in the final third since the team is dependent on half chances and this far failed to provide anything meaningful for Harry Kane.
The German team too have problems in the final third, it is a combination of decision making from players and poor finishing, but still, they tend to create a lot of chances than their opponents in the previous three games. The lack of a proper number 9 is the main reason beyond this low turnaround of goals and Low must find a way to give some playing time to Kevin Volland.
Unlike in the games against Portugal and Hungary, chances will be few here with the English defense much more organized and midfielders well capable of keeping ball possession.
Therefore, this be a match of few chances and both teams are very unlikely to take high risks. Historically, a high percentage of their duels at major tournaments are low scoring affairs and we back bets within these criteria here.
Probable Playing XI:
Lloris – Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Hernandez – Pogba, Kante, Coman, Griezmann – Mbappe, Benzema.
Sommer – Elvedi, Akanji, Rodriguez, Widmer – Freuler, Xhaka, Zuber – Shaqiri – Embolo, Seferovic.
