Focus is on 2023 WC, chief selector on Mashrafe

With less than three years into next ODI World Cup, Bangladesh management has turned its focus to the mega event.

On Monday afternoon it was announced that Mashrafe would not form a part of Bangladesh’s next ODI assignment against West Indies this month. The series will be Tigers’ first in Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-23.

In March 2020, Mashrafe played his last ODI as captain when his team had swept Zimbabwe 3-0. He won 50 matches as captain in this format. With 269 wickets from 218 matches, the 37-year-old still remains Bangladesh’s most successful bowler in their favourite format – ODI cricket.

“We always have respect towards him. He has given a lot for our country. It was a tough decision. Nonetheless we have to accept reality and move forward. Our focus is based on 2023 World Cup. We have taken this decision collectively. [We] had to switch off Mashrafe. It’s a new start… Whoever plays in place of him will have a great opportunity. We have to build up a player,” chief selector Nannu said.

“I talked to him. The team management gave us their plans. We also discussed a lot about our plans. All the discussions have led to this decision thinking of the country and moving ahead. The youngsters have to given opportunities. He will continue playing [domestic cricket]. It’s upto him.

“We are starting anew in 2021, after ten months. Everything is happening with new starts. We have thought about 2023. A lot of matches await in 2021, be it Tests or ODIs. That’s why we have made a large pool of players for both formats.

As the series starts from January 20th, it will mark Bangladesh’s first international affair since pandemic. BCB wants the players to stay mentally fresh ahead of a busy schedule.

“We discussed with team management by pressing on 2023 ODI World Cup. Test Championship matches are also coming up. We did not play any international matches in ten months. The main thing is we want to keep our players stay mentally fresh and play good cricket.”

Mashrafe took seven wickets, including a five-for, in four games for victorious Gemcon Khulna in Bangabandhu T20 Cup last month.
