Langer blames IPL for injury woes

Australia coach Justin Langer on Wednesday suggested that the timing of the last Indian Premier League (IPL) could be the reason behind so many injuries during the ongoing India-Australia Test series,

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 13th edition of IPL was held in the September-November window in 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), though it normally begins in March or April.

“It’s really interesting how many injuries there have been throughout this summer. We suffered through it during the white-ball series and (India) through the Test series,” said Langer.

“We’ll review this, but I can’t help think that the IPL this year probably wasn’t ideal timing for anyone, certainly for such a big series like this.”

However Langer also assured that he has no issues with IPL, rather he is a big admirer of the short-form extravaganza.

“I love the IPL. I look at the IPL now like I used to look at (English) county cricket for young players, you go and play county cricket and it helps their development enormously. I think it’s the same with the IPL with our players, it helps their white-ball development,” said Langer.

“But the timing of it … probably wasn’t ideal and I wonder if that’s having an impact on the injuries we are seeing for both teams throughout this summer,” he also added.

So far as many as nine members of the Indian side in Australia have been injured; four of the have also been confirmed to be ruled out of the ongoing four-match Test series.

Injury struck the home side as well, as David Warner and Marcus Stoinis were among Australians injured during the white-ball series.

The four-match Test series is currently locked at 1-1 after first three matches. The fourth and final match will take place at The Gabba in Brisbane from Friday (January 15). Australia are currently favorites going into the series decider, as they are undefeated in Brisbane for more than 32 years.
