Germany vs Hungary Preview:
Never write off Germany, it is a saying we have heard so many times in the big tournaments and they have done it again. After losing their opening game of Euro 2020 against France, Joachim Low’s team came back to beat Portugal 4-2 and underline just how dangerous a team they are.
The victory over Portugal was much needed and was a fantastic one made even more better by the fact that they were trailing early on to a Cristiano Ronaldo goal. But Germany attacked well and got their just rewards and they must be very confident coming into this game.
Hungary were superb against France and drew 1-1. The atmosphere in Budapest was fantastic as all of the fans were allowed in the ground and it was surreal for many to see a full ground again. With Hungary at home and being cheered on it certainly affected the world champions who had to come back from a goal down to draw.
Hungary had to pick something up from the French game so a draw was welcomed or they would be out of the competition because they lost 3-0 against Portugal in their opening game.
Germany vs Hungary: Head-to-head
- The teams last played each other in 2016 in a friendly game in which Germany won 2-0.
- Incredibly the last time Germany played Hungary in a competitive fixture was back at the 1954 World Cup final.
- The last time Hungary beat Germany was in 2004.
- Hungary have only ever beaten Germany once in a competitive match which was in the 1954 World Cup group stages- and they put 8 goals past them.
- There is a 70% chance to see under 2.5 goals when these two nations meet.
Germany have won 6 of their last 10 games played. One worry is that they keep conceding goals and have done so in 4 of their last five games. Form probably still isn’t convincing enough overall for Low’s side but they usually win the big games and will be the odds on favourites here.
Hungary haven’t won in their last 3 games but for sure they will come into this game with confidence after drawing 1-1 with the world champions France. Hungary’s last win came against Cyprus in a friendly at the beginning of the month. There have been some other encouraging signs of form earlier in the year, drawing against Poland and late last year beating Turkey.
Germany vs Hungary: Team News:
Jonas Hofmann has a knee injury and Lukas Klostermann has missed the last squad but could be assessed. However as it stands both players look set to miss this game. Kevin Volland who has been benched this tournament is being tipped to start up front.
Daniel Gazdag is missing with a knee injury, but presently there are no other major worries for the nation ahead of this game.

Germany will be the clear favourites and you can back them to win at around 1/6 which says it all. The draw has been unlucky for Hungary as they are no longer at home and will have to travel to Munich, and Germany have had the luck to play all of their games at home.
The atmosphere in Munich will be electric and we can expect Hungary to face some of their own medicine that they dished out to France at the weekend as the crowd did their part.
Apart from that Germany are simply the better team but will have to be focused to win of course, they will need to be tight at the back and control the pace of the game. A vintage display could see a few goals but we should also respect Hungary. This is a defence that limited France to 1 goal and even though they conceded 3 goals against Portugal that game with under 10 minutes left was still locked at 0-0.
With all that said it’s difficult to look past Germany and we should take Low’s team to get the win on the handicap for a better value price.
Probable Playing XI:
Neuer- Hummels, Ginter, Rudiger – Gosens, Kroos, Gundogan, Kimmich – Muller, Havertz – Volland.
Gulasci – Botka, Orban, Szalai – Nagy- Kleinheisler, Nego, Fiola, Schafer – Szalai, Sallai.
