Despite being one league apart, we do not expect any noticeable gulf in class between these teams on Tuesday.
Pompey will be hoping to keep goalkeeper Alex Bass less busy after conceding two goals in each of their first two pre-season friendlies, with a low-scoring draw likely to suit both managers given that match fitness is the most important consequence at this stage of the summer.
Liverpool vs Wacker Innsbruck Club Preview:
Liverpool kick off their first pre-season games tomorrow at their Austrian training case. The Reds will first face FC Wacker Innsbruck, before then squaring off against German side VfB Stuttgart.
Both games will be 30 minutes each, and will be an opportunity for the players currently in pre-season training to get some minutes in their legs.
Here are five things to look out for ahead of tomorrow’s games:
The right-back missed the tournament due to picking up an injury in one of England’s pre-tournament friendlies, and as a consequence had to watch on as Gareth Southgate’s side narrowly missed out on European Championship glory.
“[I’m] fully pain-free. I’ve been doing a lot of rehab when we were off over the summer with the physios and the medical staff, which was good for me,” Alexander-Arnold told Liverpool’s official website.
“I feel fit, I feel healthy and I’m back in full training now, so it’s good. It’s good for me.
“I’ve done quite a few sessions with the lads now, I feel fit enough to play. But the decision comes from the manager, the staff and obviously the medical staff, they need to talk and see if it’s worth the risk.”
Jürgen Klopp has since confirmed that Alexander-Arnold should be in line to feature.
Another player who could see minutes in the games is Joël Matip.
Formed in 2002 from the ashes of FC Tirol Innsbruck and the original FC Wacker Innsbruck, Liverpool’s Austrian opposition are based a two-hour drive from the training base at Saalfelden.
Their manager, Daniel Bierofka, is a former Bundesliga winger who enjoyed stints with 1860 Munich, Bayer Leverkusen and Stuttgart, before moving into coaching with 1860.
Though currently playing in 2.Liga, Wacker Innsbruck spent a season in the Austrian top flight in 2018/19, suffering relegation after finishing bottom of the table.
Wacker Innsbruck’s season has already begun, warming up for their 30-minute clash with Liverpool by thrashing SVG Reichenau 8-0 in the first round of the Austrian Cup.
Liverpool will be without a clutch of high-profile regulars, owing to international commitments at the Euros and Copa America.
First-team stars such as Alisson Becker, Fabinho, Andy Robertson, Jordan Henderson, Roberto Firmino, Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota and Xherdan Shaqiri are among the players who are yet to return to pre-season training due to their international commitments this month.
A number of youngsters are likely to be blooded by Liverpool, with Harvey Elliott – who has returned to the club following a loan spell at Blackburn – the standout in the squad.
The 19-year-old looks set to feature prominently for the Reds this season and he will be looking to make his mark in these games.
Central defender Ibrahima Konate – the club’s only summer arrival to date, following his switch from RB Leipzig in May – is likely to feature for the Reds for the first time.
