Mashrafe has the highest chance of getting dropped, says Papon

Pacer Mashrafe Bin Mortaza may not be considered for Bangladesh’s home series against West Indies this month, hints BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon.

37-year-old Mashrafe’s future remains uncertain as Bangladesh look to build on a group to ace under new captain ODI Tamim Iqbal.

Three-match West Indies series, part of Cricket World Cup Super League 2020-23, will kick off on January 20. With a preliminary squad set to be announced this week, Mashrafe could be a name missing as per Papon.

“He (Mashrafe) has the highest chance of getting dropped, taking fitness into account. If you ask me… he has the highest chance of getting dropped. But it’s tough to say! He loves taking challenges,” Papon told Ekattor news television in an interview.

“He himself is suffering from confusion. He was [confused] earlier and still is. I did not have any clue of that. His decision making was clean and clear till the day he was captain.

“Questions may arise whether he is going to find a place in playing XI if he is in the squad. In this case, the chance is dim. We have to move forward keeping the upcoming series and tournament in head.”

Mashrafe stepped down from captaincy in Bangladesh’s last ODI series against Zimbabwe in March 2020. He made return to cricket field after nine months, becoming a part of Gemcon Khulna’s winning group in Bangabandhu T20 Cup. The Narail Express claimed his first T20 five-for in the Qualifier 1 clash against Gazi Group Chattogram.

Previously, there were speculations around Mashrafe’s possible retirement in the 2019 World Cup match against Pakistan at Lord’s. He later missed three-ODI tour of Sri Lanka with injury just after the mega event.

Following West Indies series, Bangladesh will tour New Zealand for three ODIs and three T20Is.
