Mashrafe’s future not solely selectors’ decision

The onus is on BCB (Bangladesh Cricket Board), head coach and selectors to finalise Mashrafe Bin Mortaza’s future with the national team.

Mashrafe stepped down from ODI captaincy in Bangladesh’s last series against Zimbabwe in March. There has been speculations on whether the stalwart is going to take any part in Bangladeshi colours.

Bangladesh are set to welcome international in January with the home series against West Indies. BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon claimed Mashrafe’s matter was upto the selection panel.

“Maybe. It’s upto selectors. It’s tough to speak about it now. No one is dropping him however,” Papon said during the finals day of Bangabandhu T20 Cup.

But selector Habibul Bashar Sumon has different words on it. According to him, Mashrafe’s future depends on the board and Domingo Russell, the head coach, as well.

“We have not spoken about Mashrafe’s participation. We will talk (about it) when head coach Russell Domingo arrives. Moreover, his inclusion in the team does not only depend on selectors or the coaches. The board will also have a say,” Bashar said.

“They (coaches) definitely have a future plan. And so do we (selectors). The vital thing is, we will decide whatever works good for the country. So keeping Mashrafe or not is not solely our decision.”

West Indies will play three ODIs on January 20, 22 (at Mirpur) and 25 (in Chattogram) before two Tests.

Mashrafe came back to cricket after a long nine months in the T20 Cup, where he ended up as the member of victorious Gemcon Khulna group. In the Qualifier 1 match against Gazi Group Chattogram, he grabbed a match-winning five-wicket haul.
