Mominul best suited for Test captaincy, says Tamim

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque has been at the receiving end of harsh criticism from a part of the country’s cricket fraternity due to his side’s poor run of form against West Indies in the ongoing Test series.

After conceding a defeat in the first Test in Chattogram that few saw coming, Bangladesh are again in trouble in the second Test, and may very well suffer a 2-0 series sweep.

However, opener Tamim Iqbal believes Mominul is the most suited person in the Bangladesh side to lead the team as captain.

“Most important thing is, I personally believe (Mominul) is worthy of the job. Captaining in Test cricket is never easy,” said Tamim.

The swashbuckling opener also explained why he rates Mominul so highly. “His though process, planning, focus and vision on Test cricket… I don’t think there is anyone else who can lead the team better than him.”

Though Bangladesh haven’t yet found any notable success since Mominul was appointed as the Test captain back in October 2019, Tamim stressed on giving him some more time.

“One thing you all must remember that he is still very young. You should give him the time to grow up. As a young man he may make mistakes once in a while, which every captain does. But he will learn from this. And I am sure he will become more capable with the passage of time. In future we will see him doing great.”

Tamim also said the senior cricketers will keep supporting the 29-year-old Test captain. “We obviously want to support him. Whenever we have something in mind, we share it with him. Then he is the one to decide which suggestion he should take and which he should skip. I believe this is good sign for a captain.

“Sometimes I also feel this that we should follow all the decisions he is taking, and we do just that. It’s not like that we are seniors so only we will give him advices.”
