Phillips’ record ton hands NZ series win

New Zealand have taken an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series against West Indies after a 72-run win in the second T20I in Mount Maunganui, courtesy of Glenn Phillip’s swashbuckling maiden hundred.

New Zealand posted 238/3, their third highest T20I total, after being sent into bat. In reply, West Indies could not get any big innings from their batsmen. The wickets kept falling at regular intervals in the chase. Big hitter Shimron Hetmyer’s sluggish 32-ball 25 did not help the West Indies.

Skipper Kieron Pollard top-scored with 15-ball 28 runs as the Caribbeans managed only 166/9 in the 20 overs. Kyle Jamieson was the pick of the Kiwi bowlers as he bagged 2 for 15 runs in his four overs.

Earlier New Zealand were off to a quick start off the bat of Martin Guptill (34 off 23). Phillips, who came into bat at No.4 after the powerplay, started bashing the West Indian bowlers with Devon Conway at the other end.

The duo paired up for a record 184-run stand for the third wicket, which is the highest non-opening partnership in T20I history as well as New Zealand’s highest for any wicket.

Phillips, who brought up his half century in 22 balls, raced off to a 46-ball hundred in the 19th over. This is the fastest T20I century by a New Zealand batsman. The previous record was held by Colin Munro (47 balls), who incidentally achieved it against the same opposition and at the same venue.

Phillips departed scoring 108 runs from 51 deliveries including 8 sixes and 10 fours. Conway, who made his Blackcaps debut in the first T20I, scored his maiden fifty. The left-hander hit 4 sixes and as many fours in his knock of 37-ball 65* runs.

The third and final T20I will be on Monday. Mitchell Santner will lead the hosts as Tim Southee, who is also a stand-in skipper, will be rested ahead of the Test series.

Brief scores:

New Zealand 238/3 in 20 overs (Phillips 108, Conway 65*, Guptill 34; Pollard 1/33)

West Indies 166/9 in 20 overs (Pollard 26, Hetmyer 25; Jamieson 2/15, Santner 2/41)

New Zealand won by 72 runs
