The process of fixing the numerous errors that led to the Portland Trail Blazers losing 126-95 at Denver on Wednesday began with film session and practice on Thursday.
As the saying goes: “The film don’t lie.” The truth certainly was ugly. What the Blazers watched could qualify for an R rating from the Motion Picture Association given its gruesomeness.
Thankfully, for Portland, it has another game Friday night at Denver to correct those mistakes.
“The film session was instructive and necessary,” Portland coach Terry Stotts said. “The reception was good, and I thought we got a lot accomplished on the floor. It wasn’t physically taxing but we went through a lot of things that we need to go through at the defensive end.”
Portland looked lost on defense during Friday’s game especially in the first quarter when Denver opened up a 41-24 lead. Nuggets players routinely got open looks and their ball movement befuddled the Blazers. Denver racked up 39 assists.
So, Portland went back to the drawing board to fix several issues.
“We had a lot of breakdowns, a lot of stuff we need to improve upon,” guard CJ McCollum said.
The purpose of preseason is to fine tune execution. Therefore, having a bad night filled with mistakes does not a crisis make. Stotts said he was disappointed only because the players blew assignments that had been covered during practices.
“We were indecisive and we were in the wrong place a lot of times,” Stotts said. “We didn’t do some things that we’d been practicing in the few practices that we’ve had.”

Playing Denver again provides the Blazers an opportunity to test out their adjustments right away against the same team that shredded them. So, expect Portland to take demonstrating improvement personally.
According to McCollum, the Blazers must strike a balance between playing well and understanding that the game does not count.
“We need to obviously play better,” McCollum said. “We need to be better offensively and defensively. We also need to take advantage of these days leading up to next week. I think there’s a fine balance between playing better but also understanding that you know we got a lot to work on before we start playing real games.”
