Bangladesh team will again be without Mahmudullah Riyad in Tests in the upcoming tour against Sri Lanka, which has been finally finalized on Monday (April 5).
Riyad had not been considered for Test in recent times. But after the failure against West Indies Tests at home, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) re-considered Riyad again for the Tests, which means Sri Lanka tour would be his return in the longest format of the cricket after a long period.
But the 35-year old all-rounder will miss the tour of Sri Lanka because of injury. He could not play in the last T20 against New Zealand due to side strain.
Riyad is still suffering from that injury. So the selectors are planning to announce the Test team without him. There has been a lot of discussion in the selection panel over the past few days about injured Riyad.
He will still need about 10 days to recover from the injury and at least two weeks to return to the field. Then there will be fitness issues obviously. Bangladesh team will leave the country on April 12 and keeping uncertainty over fitness, it will be risky to keep Riyad in the Test team.
A special source told BDCricTime, “It will take another 10 days for Riyad to recover from his injury. It remains to be seen how prepared he will be to play matches. The team is also scheduled to leave on the 12th. So it is difficult to consider Riyad in the team for the next two Tests against Sri Lanka.”
Riyad has played 49 Tests for Bangladesh and scored 2764 runs at an average of 31.77. He has also taken 43 wickets. He last played a Test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi a year ago.
