‘Shakib’s absence a chance for everyone to perform’

Gemcon Khulna will lock horns against Gazi Group Chattogram in the final of Bangabandhu T20 Cup 2020 without their A-grade pick Shakib Al Hasan.

Shakib, who played nine matches in the tournament, left the team after the Qualifier 1 to attend a family emergency.

The world No.2 T20I all-rounder struggled with the bat throughout the T20 Cup until the qualifier, where he seemed to be finding his feet in a cameo 15-ball 28-run innings. His absence will be felt but it is an opportunity for others, admits Khulna captain Mahmudullah Riyad.

“It would have been great for us if Shakib had stayed. We all know about Shakib’s capability. Although he is not here, it is our responsibility and chance to perform well,” Mahmudullah told the media ahead of the finals day.

Mahmudullah, will however enjoy the presence of Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in the camp which might lead them to clinching the title. Mashrafe, who was roped in middle of the tournament, holds the experience of winning four Bangladesh Premier League T20 finals.

“No doubt, Mashrafe bhai’s inclusion is a real positive side for us. We talk in and out of the dressing room because he is very experienced. It is really helpful for us, including me, if we can share his experience.

“This is why I talk to Mashrafe bhai always. I try to take a lot of ideas from him. He is one of the, in fact, the most successful captain of our cricket history. He won four BPL trophies. We are lucky to have him,” Mahmudullah added.

Khulna raced into the final by defeating Chattogram by 47 runs in the Qualifier 1. Chattogram eventually made their berth the next day, winning over Beximco Dhaka in the second qualifier.
