South Africa to name new Test captain after Pakistan series

Cricket South Africa to relieve Quinton de Kock from the Test captaincy, after the end of the ongoing Test against Pakistan in Pakistan.

South Africa are currently in Pakistan to play two Tests and three T20Is. The second Test has been started at Rawalpindi after Pakistan winning the first Test comfortably by seven wickets.

Most probably this will be the last Test for South African wicket-keeper batsman Quinton de Kock as the Test captain of the national cricket team. South Africa head coach Mark Boucher said that the team management and board are keen on naming a new Test captain to release the present skipper from the burden.

“When we get back after this tour we’ve got a bit of time before our next Test series so we can sit down and make a good, solid call on who can take over from him and release him from that burden and try and get the best out of him,” Boucher said on the eve of the second Test in Pakistan.

South Africa were scheduled to host Australia, straight after the ongoing tour in Pakistan. But due to the pandemic situation in South Africa, Cricket Australia has postponed the visit to South Africa. This means Cricket South Africa will get ample time to name a new Test captain.

“We’re not that harsh on Quinny in this environment. We know that he’s a quality player and there’s a good innings around the corner for him. He has been given the extra burden of being captain and that can be tough and something he’s not used to.”
