Sri Lanka in box seat on first day of Boxing Day Test

The visiting Sri Lankan batsmen have done extremely well against the host South African bowlers in the first Test of two-match Test series at Super Sports Park in Centurion. Sri Lanka scored 340 runs with the loss of 6 wickets on the first day of the Boxing Day Test.

Especially the experienced batsmen Dinesh Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva are leading the Lankans towards a challenging score. Two important half centuries have come out of the bats of these two batsmen.

The rest of the batsmen also scored more or less. That is why the Lankans’ runs on the scoreboard at the end of the first day is quite good. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kushal Perera could not give a good start after winning the toss and opting to bat. Perera was out for 16 runs. Karunaratne made only 22 runs.

Kushal Mendis also returned with 12 runs. When Sri Lanka lost 3 wickets for 54 runs, Chandimal and Dhananjaya pair emerged as the savior. Dhananjaya left the field injured after scoring 79 runs.

Chandimal played 161 balls and scored 85 runs. Wicket-keeper batsman Niroshan Dickwella could not score a half century for only 1 run. He was dismissed for 49 runs. All-rounder Dasun Shanaka is batting with 25 runs.

Wanindu Hasaranga was dismissed for 18 runs. Kasun Rajitha is unbeaten on 7 runs. Dhananjaya, who is unbeaten on 79, will be able to return to the field at the end of the innings if he recovers.

Wiaan Mulder took 3 wickets for South Africa. Lungi Ngidi, Lutho Sipamla and Anrich Nortje also took 1 wicket each.
