Sri Lanka take lead on a mixed day

Sri Lanka have opened their second innings lead as they are leading by five runs in the second innings of second Test against South Africa.

The second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka is been played at Wanderers from January 3rd. Sri Lankan captain Dimuth Karunaratne won the toss and elected to bat first. But the decision to bat first backfired the hosts. It was a poor display of batting from Sri Lankan batsmen as the visitors were bowled out for 157 in their first innings.

South Africa were off to a steady first innings. By the stumps on day one, the hosts were 148/1, after losing the wicket of Aiden Markram. The overnight batsmen Dean Elgar and Rassie van der Dussen started the proceedings on day two and they crossed century and half-century respectively.

But there was a twist in the tale as Sri Lankan bowlers brought them back into tha game with some quick wickets. The centurion was the first one to go and the team score was 218 before the wicket. The good show by Sri Lankan bowlers bowled out the hosts for 302 in their first innings.

Anyhow South Africa managed to take an 145 runs lead at the end of first innings, which is pretty match handy to get the game in their hand. Vishwa Fernando was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka with a five wicket haul.

After coming back slightly into the game, Sri Lankan top order failed to utilize the opportunity they had got. The top order batsmen lost their wickets in quick intervals. On the other side, skipper Dimuth Karunaratne put a fighting knock and remained unbeaten till the day’s end along with Niroshan Dickwella. By the stumps on day two, Sri Lanka are 150/4, leading by 5 runs.
