Touring West Indies side capable of winning Tests, claims Brathwaite

The touring West Indies side might look a lot weaker than their Bangladeshi counterparts in paper after as many as 12 cricketers opting out of the tour, but Test skipper Kraigg Brathwaite believes they are still capable of winning Test matches, and that will be their main target to achieve against the Tigers.

Earlier West Indies coach Phil Simmons had insisted that sometimes enthusiasm and hunger can trump experience. Brathwaite also echoed same sentiments on Wednesday (January 13) while addressing the media.

“I think we have a very good team. We are missing some senior guys but I still know that this team is capable winning Tests. These guys are hungry to do well. I just have to lead from the front, with decisions on the field and as batsman,” said the 28-year-old cricketer.

“I know the guys are very hungry for success. I know they’d do anything to get success, and if that happens from a batting and bowling point of view, it will help the team to win. I can see the opportunity for them to grab. They would want to show the world that they could do the job, and not just here to fill in the spots. They could perform and do well for West Indies,” he also said.

Brathwaite also believes that while he has come Bangladesh to play the series, one can not put blame on the cricketers who have decided to skip the tour.

“I can’t speak for the others. They must have had reasons. You can’t fault that. I decided to come to play. I look forward to it.”

Asked what the Test squad will do in next few weeks as the tour will feature the ODIs first from January 20 to 25, Brathwaite said: “Obviously a lot of practice and physical fitness. I am not sure if we will have any inter-squad games. We will have many sessions when we will plan, and then play the practice game and the two Tests.”

He is also taking the task of tackling Bangladeshi spinners as a challenge and looking forward to overcoming it, “We reviewed after the last series, and found out where we could have improved. We have specific plans that we will carry out. We look forward to the challenge.”
