Umesh Yadav ruled out of Test series; head back to India

In what comes as a big blow to Team India, fast bowler Umesh Yadav has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series. The Indian pacer limped off with tearing pain in his calf muscle during the MCG Test against Australia. He walked off the field midway through the match and was taken for scans. Now, that it is confirmed that he will no longer take part in the rest of the series.

The pacer has returned home as reported by news agency ANI. With no Umesh Yadav and Mohammed Shami, India’s fast bowling department took a huge hit. Ishant Sharma was already ruled out of the Test series due to injury.

However, the team management will be relying on the services of Mohammed Siraj. He replaced Shami in the Boxing Day Test and proved his worth in both innings. He took 5 wickets on his debut. The Indian squad also includes Navdeep Saini and Shardul Thakur.

Thakur was included after Shami’s exit. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu sensation T Natarajan, who was asked by the Indian team management to stay in Australia as a net bowler has been added to the squad after the cricketer’s departure.

“The selectors had added Shardul Thakur (Mumbai paceman) as a replacement for Mohammed Shami (out with a fractured forearm), and there is Navdeep Saini too, but it’s very much likely that Natrajan would be preferred (for the Sydney Test) given that he brings variation to the attack.

Also, like Mitchell Starc does for Nathan Lyon, he would create footmarks which spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja can exploit,” TOI quoted their sources as saying.

The reports further added saying that KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma will make the cut in playing XI for the third Test at the SCG in place of Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Vihari.

“Rohit can either open the innings or come at No. 5 since he can then get time to find his groove after quarantining recently. If he plays in the middle-order, KL can open the innings, or it can be vice-versa.”
