Whitewashing Zimbabwe ‘very much possible’, says Saifuddin

Mohammad Saifuddin is making his comeback to international cricket with the upcoming three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe.

The pace bowling all-rounder said he is looking to whitewash Zimbabwe, despite making it clear on Thursday (February 27) that he is not taking the assignment lighly “just because the opposition team is Zimbabwe”.

The last time Bangladesh had played against Zimbabwe, the result was a whitewash in the Tigers’ favour. According to Saifuddin, a similar result is very much possible.

“Yes, definitely it is possible (to whitewash Zimbabwe). Comparatively we are much ahead of Zimbabwe. We have won the Test match commandably. Even we had whitewashed them in the last ODI series.

“It is very tough to predict what is going to happen on the field. But still we are optimistic (about clinching the series 3-0).”

Saifuddin also warned his teammates that it would be a mistake to take Zimbabwe lightly, referring to recent defeats of England to weaker opponents.

“Whoever plays well on the field will emerge victorious. So there is no way to underestimate Zimbabwe. Even England have lost to weaker teams. So it is tough to predict. But we will give our hundred percent.”

Injury has been the biggest enemy of Saifuddin’s career, as a recurring back injury has prevented him from playing time and again. But he thinks as a professional cricketer he has to prove himself with performance other than anything else.

“Maybe it was five months for injury, but I was out of the team for eight months in total. And I had been out of the team even before. I am a professional cricketer. So it’s natural that I will be in the side if I play good, and will be sidelined if the performance is bad. I have adapted to this.”
