Zimbabwe cancel whole 2019-20 cricket season
Zimbabwe have canceled their domestic cricket season due to coronavirus. This consequence of Zimbabwe cricket may alarm other board players-officials.
The whole world is at a standstill because of the coronavirus, and so is cricket. The boards that failed to finish the season are looking to get cricket back on the field. Some are looking for a winner in the unfinished tournament. However, Zimbabwe cricket did not follow either path. The country’s board has canceled Zimbabwe’s domestic season.
The lockdown has been going on in Zimbabwe since March 30, cricket has stopped on March 18. Earlier, the first class league was going on, Logan Cup and List ‘A’ contest were also on the field. Meanwhile, the board officials decided to cancel the season. In other words, it is not possible to end this season.
Zimbabwe have not decided any winner in any tournaments. Because, the teams did not play equal number of matches in the tournaments. In such a situation the announcement of the winner to the top team in the points table could be controversial. The board therefore did not walk that path.
Eminent Zimbabwe cricketer Hamilton Masakadza has now left the game to take charge of the board of directors. “We were looking forward to the end of the season,” he said of canceling the rest of the season. “But given the current situation in Zimbabwe and around the world, it is unrealistic to expect cricket to start soon.”
Masakadza added, “Zimbabwe Cricket has decided to cancel the 2019-20 season. We will not give away the trophy to anyone because the teams have not played an equal number of matches.”
